Neal A. Sher MD FACS. is a
well known ophthalmic surgeon with over thirty years of experience. He
has an active corneal, refractive surgery and ophthalmology practice
and specializes in laser vision correction (PRK and related procedures,
LASIK, CK). Dr. Sher has been involved in the laser refractive surgery
field since its earliest days and was one of the first surgeons in the
world to perform excimer therapeutic and laser vision correction. He
has authored two textbooks, several monographs and dozens of peer reviewed articles on refractive surgery and is a
Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota
Medical School.
Dr. Sher has a special interest and expertise in medicolegal
aspects of ophthalmology.He provides expert
evaluation of potential malpractice
casesinvolving ophthalmology for
defense and plaintiff. He has
consulted for a number of malpractice carriers and some of the nation's leading
law firms.He has served as an expert in intellectual
property cases for ophthalmic equipment and pharmaceutical companies.
Dr. Sher performs independent medical exams for attorneys
needing evaluation of complex eye injuries involved in workman's compensation
or litigation.Dr. Sher has been a
consultant for the U.S. Department of Justice for Medicare fraud issues and the
Minnesota Supreme Court.He has
consulted, run clinical trials and performed research for a number of leading
ophthalmic device and pharmaceutical companies
Dr. Sher also
has considerable experience in the evaluation of toxic exposures to various chemicals such as
ammonia and chlorine and has put together teams of ophthalmic specialists for
the screening of large numbers of patients. He has evaluated hundreds of
patients for ocular injuries from exposure to ammonia and chlorine gas.
Dr.
Sher has been awarded the Achievement Award by the American Academy of
Ophthalmology and the Troutman Medal from the International Society for
Refractive Surgery for his work on postoperative regimens in surface
ablation. He has received a number of citations and unit awards from
the U.S. military and the Governor of South Dakota (2010) for his
donation of laser vision correction surgery without charge to over 600
soldiers going to war zones. In 2008, he was awarded a Medallion of
Excellence by General David Petraeus for his contributions to the
military. He was one of six physicians in Minnesota honored by Minnesota
Physician magazine in 2010 as a Community Caregiver for his work
with troops.
On a selective basis, Dr. Sher provides medical
consultation and expert testimony to liability carriers, government
agencies, defense and plaintiff attorneys and corporations.
